Moving to your first apartment is really an exciting experience. With all the freedom you have to choose a place to stay, it easy to get carried away with the hype of the process.
People look for apartments due to different reasons. Some relocate after getting a new job or being admitted into college. Others simply wanted to have a change in the scenery. Consider Your Budget
Before browsing through that long list of beautiful apartments, you must first determine your budget. Be realistic in creating your budget. Choose only one that you are sure you can afford to pay every month so it won’t be a burden. Be sure to include your expenses on home necessities such as lamps, kitchen utensils and other basics.

Set Your Location
How far do you want your apartment from your work or school? Others want to commute but some want it nearer to save on transportation costs. Finding an apartment in your desired location may sometimes compromise some of your preferences. You can try to search online or do it personally by walking around your target neighbourhood.
Prepare the Necessary Questions in Your Mind
Make a list of the questions you would want to ask when you first meet the landlord. The most common questions are:
- What are the utilities included?
- How much is the security deposit? The rent? When is it due?
- Is there a lease? If so, how long?
- Are pets allowed?
- How is the building’s turnover rate?

Read Before Signing a Lease
If you think you’ve found the one, read the lease and reread it until you fully understand everything it states. Feel free to ask the landlord for clarifications before signing it. Make sure you document the current condition of the place and inform the landlord immediately to avoid future problems.
Now you’ve found a new place, don’t forget to be a good neighbor. However, if you think it’s not the right one, you can always move out after the lease is up.
